James Franco is going back in time for Hulu.
Earlier this morning at the Hulu Upfront Presentation in New York City, the streaming service announced that Franco will star in the nine-hour limited event series 11/22/1963, a thriller based on the best-selling 2011 novel by Stephen King.
Executive produced by the creative dream team of King and J.J. Abrams, 11/22/1963 follows high school history teacher Jake Epping (Franco) as he travels back in time to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Complications arise in the form of Lee Harvey Oswald, love, and the past itself, which, according to the series synopsis, doesn’t want to be changed.
Hulu announced five new original programs in all at the upfronts, including Difficult People, a comedy executive produced by Amy Poehler. Starring Billy Eichner and Julie Klausner, the series follows two best friends dealing with awkward situations in New York City, and will premiere some time this summer.
Not content with merely creating something new, Hulu is also taking an enormous step towards becoming master of the online domain by acquiring the exclusive subscription video-on-demand rights to Seinfeld (Jerry Seinfeld himself made a surprise appearance at the event to announce the big news).
Seinfeld will be available for Hulu subscribers to stream beginning this June

At 84, Robert Duvall shows no signs of slowing down on the big screen.
The above exclusive trailer for Wild Horses showcases the Oscar winner —
most recently seen opposite Robert Downey Jr. in The Judge — who wrote, directed, and stars in this cowboy crime drama.
Also starring James Franco, Josh Hartnett, and Duvall’s wife, Luciana, as a Texas Ranger compelled to reopen a 15-year-old missing-persons case, Wild Horses enters select theaters on June 5 — the same day it goes on demand.

A24 is closing a low seven-figure deal for U.S. rights to The Adderall Diaries, the Pamela Romanowsky-directed film that premiered at Tribeca and stars James Franco as a troubled and drug-addicted writer who becomes fascinated by a big murder trial and decides to create a book focusing on the explosive case of a man suspected of killing his ex-wife.
The deal is being brokered by WME Global and CAA. A24 earlier today wrapped up another A24 deal on the William Monahan-directed Mojave. Both deals are with A24’s arrangement with DirectTV, which gets first crack at the films before they reach theaters. In The Adderall Diaries, Christian Slater plays the defendant. Romanowsky wrote the script based on Stephen Elliott’s memoir. Rabbit Bandini’s Vince Jolivette produced it with Franco, and Window Seat’s Joseph McKelheer and James Reach. The film was shot in New York and also stars Amber Heard, Ed Harris, and Wilmer Valderrama. Kathy Morgan is selling foreign.

James Franco enjoys making films that “make us uncomfortable”.
The 37-year-old actor stars in the American drama movie ‘I Am Michael’, which is based on Benoit Denizet-Lewis’ New York Times Magazine article ‘My Ex-Gay Friend’, and admits he’s a fan of movies that cause its audience to think.
Reflecting on the movie, James – who plays a gay rights activist who later denounced his homosexuality – said: “There’s the coming out narrative, the fighting for rights narrative, the closeted secret affair narrative, like we saw in ‘Brokeback Mountain’.
“All of these films are very important, but not every movie needs to be like that. Once those stories are told, we can tell unexpected ones that might challenge us or make us uncomfortable in some ways.”
However, James thinks there are certain aspects to his film that distinguishes it from other movies made in recent years.
He told BlackBook: “What I think is so innovative about ‘I Am Michael’ is that we’re watching a man go in an unexpected direction, and that direction brings up a lot of questions about identity, and what identity consists of, and how it’s defined, and who gets to decide.
“And this film tackles faith versus sexuality, and the tensions there, in an important way.”

In his new Tribeca Film Festival movie, “The Adderall Diaries,” James Franco gets to dig into real-life author Stephen Elliott, a man whose works dance on the razor’s edge where truth and lies meet. In the film, those lines blur in spectacularly destructive fashion, when aspects of Elliott’s latest memoir become challenged by reality — specifically, that his “dead” father is very much alive.
For Franco, playing in Elliott’s world, as Elliott himself, presented a unique challenge as an actor, getting to dive headfirst into the author’s “raw” depiction of himself.
“One of the best things about Stephen Elliott’s work is he uses himself, always,” Franco told MTV’s Josh Horowitz about the appeal of the man at the heart of the movie. “I’m sure he gets criticism for that, but also a lot of the attention he gets is because he does that so well and puts himself at the center so well and portrays himself in such a raw way.”
“That is interesting to me, just as a creative person, putting oneself into the work,” he continued. “Not just in the sense of straight memoir, ’Let me tell you what happened,’ but also putting a certain amount of craft or spin on it. Maybe some people would call it creative non-fiction.”The creative license Elliott applies to his “memoirs” might inspire controversy from some people in his life, according to Franco, but that only speaks to the creative goal he believes Elliott’s trying to accomplish.
“Some of the people in his life, like his father, will start to question his version of things,” he said. “But I think the real Stephen would argue, ’Well, this is my creativity. This is the way that I work. I’m not here to write a memoir. I’m here to create a piece of art.’”

In what could be one of the most chilling and uncomfortable true story thrillers in recent years, James Franco and Jonah Hill star in just that: ‘True Story’. And the experience has helped them relate to journalist Michael Finkel on which the film is based.
When Finkel was fired from the New York Times for fabricating a news story, he found himself without any job prospects. However, as luck would have it (good or bad, depending on how you look at it), he soon became embroiled in a high profile murder case when Christian Longo used Finkel’s name on being arrested for killing his family. This was finally a job that Finkel could take on, but little did he know how complex and unnerving his relationship with Longo would become.‘They’re both going through massive changes and, for both people, pretty negative changes at the same exact time, when this lie brings them together’, Hill – who plays Finkel – explains. While the idea of culling one’s own family might be lost on both Hill and Franco, the pair did admit to being able to relate to Finkel on some level.
‘The subject matter is really heavy and, a lot of the movie, Mike’s by himself taking all of this in’, Hill admits. ‘I found it hard to shake that off at the end of the day. Not in a pretentious way, just thinking about these murders and what happened. It was hard to just go home and go to dinner with friends and just laugh like I usually would.’
Meanwhile, Franco explains his understanding of Finkel’s initial mistakes. ‘The real Finkel made up a source and that’s why he got in trouble’, he says. ‘But anything, any news story, any non-fiction story is something that’s shaped, it’s something that’s edited, it’s something that’s, on a certain level, created and put together for a specific purpose, mainly to – yes, to deliver news – but also to get people to watch that. We’re all storytellers; whether we’re telling the truth, or our version of the truth, or just plain lying – they’re all stories.’
Hill and Franco previously appeared in ‘This Is The End’ together as fictional versions of themselves, and are currently filming an animated comedy called ‘Sausage Party’.

We know James Franco and Jonah Hill as the goofy, unstoppable pair in This is the End – but now, things are taking a turn for the serious in their new dark and gritty drama, True Story.
Hill stars as Michael Finkel, a disgraced journalist who meets Christian Longo (Franco), an accused killer who has assumed Finkel’s identity.
“I think people naturally want Jonah and I to get along when they see us in a scene together,” Franco told ET. “They become interested in the relationship — just because who we are and our history and from other kinds of movies.”
“I have such huge respect for them,” said co-star Felicity Jones. “They push boundaries and they care about film so much and [they’re] always trying new things, so it’s great to work with them.”
The film is produced by Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B – and served as Franco’s introduction to Pitt.
“He is so so nice,” said Franco. “He was really interested in the kind of the things I was doing.”
“He is the best boss in that he lets everyone just get on with their work,” said added Jones.
True Story is currently in theaters.

ON Entertainment, a leading European indie studio headed by Dimitri Rassam and Aton Soumache, has unveiled exclusively for Variety the second international trailer for Mark Osborne’s animated feature “The Little Prince,” which will world premiere at Cannes in the official selection.
One of France’s biggest-budgeted toon pics ever, the $80 million “Little Prince” marks the first animated feature film adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s classic novella, which has been sold in 145 million copies and translated in 265 languages.
“Our movie is an homage to one of France’s most iconic and revered properties, but also one of its most international, having crossed languages, cultures and generations. There is no better place than the Cannes Film Festival to showcase this unique combination,” said Rassam, who worked with his team for five years on this film.
Directed by Mark Osborne (“Kung Fu Panda”), “The Little Prince” will add star power to Cannes with its glitzy voice cast, which includes Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, James Franco, Marion Cotillard and Benicio Del Toro. Cotillard and Del Toro will also be presenting their other respective movies, “Macbeth” and “Sicario,” in competition at the festival.
The multilayered animated tale centers around a little girl (Mackenzie Foy) who lives with her mother (McAdams) and gets initiated by her eccentric yet kind-hearted neighbor, the Aviator (Bridges), into a magical world where anything is possible — a world that the Aviator himself was initiated into long ago by the Little Prince (played by newcomer Riley Osborne).
A first trailer of the Paramount release rolled out during the Christmas holidays.
“The Little Prince” will be released in France by Paramount on July 29. The U.S. release date will soon be confirmed.
Wild Bunch is handling international sales and has presold the film in all major territories.
